When buying a mobile phone thing to check are:
1: Make sure that the mobile phone turns on correctly and that it will accept the correct sim card: eg a orange mobile will work on orange sim, if it does not then dont buy it.
2: General condition of the mobile phone is that the switch works correctly, battery is not loose in the case,no damage to the case or screen, if there is dont buy it.
3: Remove the battery and check the inside label is intact and that the IMEI number is the same as the mobile is (The way to check this is *#06# on most model of mobile phone) if it is different it maybe either re-cased of the IMEI has been changed if you are not sure, then dont buy it.
4: When buying a second user mobile phone you must make sure that the person selling you the phone is the legal owner, otherwise your mobile may go off after a month or so. So get the details from the owner before buying the mobile.
5: If your mobile stops working.. on vodaphone you will get a beep beep sound from you phone on orange sim card reg error this means you mobile is now barred, then go back to the seller and ask for your money back.
